Maaloula
Maaloula is an ancient village near Damascus, known for its Christian heritage and for being one of the last places where Aramaic, the language of Jesus, is still spoken. It features historic monasteries like Saint Thecla and Saint Sergius. Despite suffering damage during the war, it remains a symbol of faith, culture, and resilience.

After decades of suppression, some locals teach Aramaic to their children in secret, almost like a rebellion to keep their identity alive. They use oral storytelling, lullabies, and secret recitations at home.

An image that was recreated by me (Samia Khouri), the painter is Louay Kayali he drew his hometown in Maaloula, Syria .In 1974, Louay Kayali painted “Maaloula in Late Winter,” a powerful piece capturing the unique charm of the ancient village of Maaloula. With its tightly packed stone houses clinging to the cliffs and soft winter tones, the painting reflects both the spiritual atmosphere and cultural depth of this historic place—one of the last where Aramaic, the language of Jesus, is still spoken.
Kayali’s brushwork gives the village a dreamlike quality, blending realism with emotion, showing Maaloula not just as a place, but as a symbol of Syrian identity and endurance.
And now, I’ve recreated this painting, honoring Kayali’s vision while adding my own artistic voice—connecting past and present through the lens of Syrian heritage and memory.
