Library of Congress

The Library of Congress is the largest library in the WORLD and it is located in Washington D.C. It is home to millions of books, films and videos, newspapers, audio recordings, photographs, manuscripts and maps.
These pictures were taken in the Library’s Thomas Jefferson building. It opened to the public in 1867, and the U.S congress chose John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz to design the interior of the building with their Italian Renaissance designs. The reason for the buildings distinct interior and exterior design was to represent the growing nationalism within the young country and it’s hope for a bright future. With electricity being a new concept at this time, it was the first public building to be built with electricity integrated. The eight marble columns in the building are meant to represent the eight supporting characteristics of civilized society.
